Jewelry Basics: A Beginner's Guide to Jewelry Mastery

Whether you're here to dip your toes (and fingers) or you're already a jewelry connoisseur... This guide is for you.

The Lowdown

Love jewelry from afar, but never really got into it? This is for you. Already love jewelry (and wear it) but want to know more about the basics? We’ve got you–this is for you as well. In today’s blog, we’ll be diving headfirst into the world of jewelry, running through the basic accessories and talking a little about how to match them. We'll explore the essentials of earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets, which will turn you from novice to aficionado faster than you can say ‘bling’!

Earrings

From top to bottom, let's kick things off with earrings – those tiny masterpieces that frame your face like a work of art. Probably the most basic of all pieces, if you ask me. Fun fact: in many countries (especially Catholic ones, like Spain, where I’m from) you get your ears pierced when you’re born, or even when you're a few days old. In other countries, such as Anglo-Saxon ones, people normally wait until the child or teen wants to get their ears pierced (after all, it has to be consensual). Other people who don’t want to commit usually go for ear cuffs, which are just as nice but no piercings are required. Of course, these are more prone to falling off. Personally, I'm grateful I was a baby when I got mine pierced, but I totally understand why some people would not like it. It's their body.

If you’re a beginner and don’t know where to start, I recommend going for thin and small, non-committal gold or silver hoops. You can never go wrong with these.

Necklaces

Moving south, we arrive at necklaces – probably the most noticeable piece of jewelry, and one that usually makes the best gift (sorry, earrings). For the budding jewelry enthusiast, a delicate chain necklace is your secret weapon. It's like that final puzzle piece that completes the picture, and it can really frame your face well, especially if you’re showing off the collarbone. One pro tip is to always match it with your earrings.

Best Pick for Beginners: Opt for a simple pendant necklace that holds sentimental value or showcases a design close to your heart. This understated piece effortlessly complements various necklines, making it a go-to accessory for both casual outings and dressier occasions. In my case, for instance, I’ve been wearing the same silver chain for years, changing the charm once in a while, depending on the occasion.

Rings

Rings are charismatic, young, and refreshing. It’s probably the piece of jewelry most worn by Gen Z–ever notice you can barely see these people’s fingers? It’s called ring stacking, and it’s actually super fun, except when it comes to washing your hands, lol. In my case, I like going for a super simple, silver ring (I’m a silver girl, what can you do) on my index finger, and a cute sapphire ring on my thumb. It’s fun to have one ring you wear all the time and then take one or two special ones you have on rotation to alternate. If you ask me, I think wearing too many rings, especially if they’re chunky, is quite tacky. But hey ho! Depends on your taste.

Best Pick for Beginners: Start with a single delicate band or a dainty ring with a small embellishment. These pieces can be worn solo for a touch of elegance or paired with other rings for a subtle stacking effect. They're versatile and can easily adapt to your evolving style.

Bracelets

This is the one we loved the most when we were little. It’s easy, it’s cute, and we see it all the time, so we’re reminded of where it’s from or who gave it to us (big up, friendship bracelets). For a dash of playfulness, charm bracelets are your best friend. For beginners, I recommend a simple chain bracelet or a bangle. These pieces are versatile and can be worn alone or layered with other bracelets. As you get more comfortable, consider adding charms or personalizing your bracelet to create a meaningful keepsake.

The Jewelry Journey: From Novice to Virtuoso

Remember, there are no wrong choices – only opportunities for self-expression. Gold with silver? Absolutely. Delicate with chunky? Why not! Try to explore and find what style suits you best, and don’t be afraid to experiment. There are no strict rules, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. After all, jewelry is an extension of your individuality, so wear pieces that make you feel good!
